The formation of geothermal resources in Hot Dry Rock (HDR) is a complex geological phenomenon. Its genesis mechanism mainly covers various factors such as crustal tectonics, underground heat flow, rock heat conduction, thermal convection, and rock thermal fracturing.

Exploration and evaluation of HDR resources require geological exploration, geophysical survey, thermal energy test, petrological research, and other means, combined with theories of geology, geophysics, geochemistry, thermodynamics, and other disciplines, to carry out a comprehensive evaluation of the geological conditions of the geothermal field, the strength of geothermal activities, the characteristics of hot rock bodies, the nature of thermal storage, heat flow distribution, heat flow density, and other aspects. The selection of HDR resource target area is mainly based on the distribution law of geothermal resources and the economic and technical conditions of geothermal development and utilization, to optimize the geothermal resources, focusing on the comprehensive evaluation of the depth, thickness, temperature, heat storage medium, and other major factors of the thermal reservoir.

In general, the genetic mechanisms, resource exploration and evaluation, and target area selection of HDR geothermal resources constitute a highly comprehensive research topic. It requires a thorough understanding of multiple disciplines, including geology, geothermal science, physics, chemistry, and thermodynamics, and also demands considerable human and material resources.
